This Youth day, June 16th, 2023, let’s not forget the past and those students who stood up and protested against unequal education and began to path the way to achieve equality and justice.
Today’s youth are facing so many other challenges and technology has had a significant impact on them as it has become an integral part of their daily lives. While it has its benefits, such as increased connectivity and access to information, overuse of technology can also lead to various challenges for young people. The youngsters today are the future, and it is concerning to see so many problems arising, which can potentially have a very negative impact on them as they grow into adults.
One of the primary issues that young people face as a result of overuse of technology is reduced physical activity. Many children and adolescents spend a considerable amount of time sitting in front of screens, which can lead to an increased risk of obesity and other health problems. Additionally, overuse of technology can lead to social isolation and a lack of face-to-face communication skills, which can impact the development of interpersonal relationships and emotional intelligence.
Another issue is the potential for online harassment and cyberbullying, which can have a severe impact on a young person's mental health and well-being. The constant exposure to unrealistic body images and lifestyles on social media can also lead to anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem in some young people.
Overall, while technology has its benefits, it's essential to strike a balance and ensure that young people are not overusing it to the detriment of their physical and mental health.
Parenting in the digital age is a challenge and the 2 biggest issues parents find themselves dealing with are, how much screen time children should be allowed and then also what content are they allowed to access online. Psychologists say that once you allow your children access to social media and the internet, you cannot let them decide what to watch and when to watch it. It is very important to be involved and be curious about their online interactions and then put limitations in place to avoid problems and even possible addiction.
There are several reasons why children may become addicted to technology, including the ease of access, the variety of content available, the instant gratification it provides and the social interaction it offers. The overuse of technology can affect a young persons brain in several ways and research suggests that excessive screen time can impact brain development, particularly in the areas related to attention span, language development, and cognitive control.
There are several chemicals in the brain which are affected with the use of technology, including dopamine, serotonin, and cortisol. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that plays a key role in motivation, reward, and pleasure. It is released when we engage in pleasurable activities like eating, exercising, or using technology. The use of technology can trigger the release of dopamine in the brain, which can create a sense of pleasure and reward. However, over time, excessive use of technology can lead to desensitization of dopamine receptors, which can contribute to addiction and other mental health issues.
Serotonin is another neurotransmitter that plays a key role in mood regulation and social behaviour. Research suggests that excessive use of technology can lead to a decrease in serotonin levels in the brain, which can contribute to depression and anxiety.
Cortisol is a hormone that is released in response to stress. Excessive use of technology can lead to chronic stress, which can cause an overproduction of cortisol. This can have negative effects on the body and brain, including impaired cognitive function, weakened immune system, and increased risk of depression and anxiety.
It is important to note that the effects of technology on brain chemicals can vary depending on factors such as the type and amount of technology use, individual susceptibility, and other environmental factors. However, it’s clear that excessive use of technology can have negative impacts on brain chemistry and overall mental health.
What can parents do to get their youngsters away from their screens?
First and foremost, they should be an example to their children. When having dinner or speaking to their off spring, put the phones and devices away and give them your attention. All mealtimes should have a “no device” rule in place.
Setting limits on screen time.
Monitoring online activity and educating young people on internet safety, including the importance of respecting others online and reporting any inappropriate behaviour.
Providing support and resources for young people who may be struggling with mental health issues related to technology use.
Encourage physical activity and encourage them to take a walk with you and take the dog along, go to the beach, or pack a back pack and go for a hike and enjoy a picnic together.
Get them cooking and baking with you.
Put on some music and learn a dance together.
Play board games and do puzzles together.
Paint a picture together.
Read a book together. Take turns in reading a page and then discuss what you have read.
Employers should also encourage staff to take a Technology break at lunch time for several reasons.
Improved productivity: Research has shown that concentration and productivity is improved, and employees are able to recharge their mental batteries, which will help them stay focused throughout the day.
Reduced stress: The constant connectivity that technology provides can contribute to feelings of stress and burnout. Thus, disconnecting during lunch breaks can improve staffs overall well-being.
Improved social connections: Lunch time can be a great opportunity for employees to connect with each other on a personal level, which can build stronger working relationships and improve morale. Employees can assist by providing staff with games to play at lunchtime and even allow them to take these home to play with their children. Giving staff company branded t-shirts and encouraging them to play indoor soccer or other sports during lunchtime, does wonders to build a strong team.
Education is key: During lunch breaks, arrange for various experts to come and speak to staff about the dangers of technology and technology addiction. Give them a branded notebook and pen where they can make notes. Encourage them to take these home and discuss these topics with their partners and children. Maybe give each staff member a “step away from technology” gift bag, filled with fun things inside to take home. Playing cards, stress balls, colouring books and crayons and anything else which may help them to get the youngsters away from the screens.
